Starbucks has taken a significant stride in its commitment to environmental sustainability by allowing the use of reusable cups for all transactions, including drive-thru and mobile orders. This initiative, effective from January 3rd, marks a pivotal move towards achieving the company’s goal of reducing waste by 50% by 2030. Emphasizing its dedication to a broader cultural shift away from single-use plastics, Starbucks positions itself as the first national coffeehouse in the United States to offer customers the option of using personal cups when placing mobile orders.

This progressive step is part of Starbucks’ ongoing efforts to address environmental concerns related to disposable cups. Recognizing the impact of single-use plastics on the environment, the company is actively working to incorporate more sustainable practices into its operations. The acceptance of reusable cups in drive-thru services aims to encourage an eco-friendly approach to takeaway beverages, aligning with the evolving preferences of customers who seek both convenience and sustainability in their daily routines.

Starbucks is not new to exploring sustainable alternatives, having tested reusable cup programs in various global markets, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, London, France, and Germany. The most extensive trial took place in 200 Colorado stores last spring, where customers have been able to use personal cups in drive-thrus since June 2023. This experience has informed Starbucks that incorporating personal cups into the drive-thru and mobile order processes is feasible without compromising operational efficiency.

Kate Daly, Managing Director and Head of the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, highlights the significance of bringing personal cups to stores, stating that it is a critical step toward reducing single-use packaging waste. Starbucks echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the environmental benefits of utilizing cups consumers already own.

To facilitate the use of personal cups in drive-thru orders, customers can inform the barista about their reusable cups when placing their beverage orders. The personal cup, without a lid, is then placed in a “contactless vessel” at the pickup window to ensure hygiene and safety. For mobile orders on the Starbucks app, customers can select “Personal Cup” in the customization menu and present their cups at pickup. It’s important to note that all cups must be clean and handed over without lids.

Starbucks assures that the introduction of personal cups has not negatively impacted overall drive-thru times based on its testing in Colorado. The company’s commitment to maintaining efficiency while embracing sustainable practices reflects a balance between environmental responsibility and customer convenience.

As an incentive for customers to adopt reusable practices, Starbucks offers a discount of 10 cents off a drink for those who bring and use clean reusable cups. Loyalty program members also earn 25 bonus stars, with the opportunity to earn up to 25 stars three times per day at participating locations.

In addition to its sustainability initiatives, Starbucks is welcoming the new year with an updated winter menu. Notable additions include the Iced Hazelnut Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, new potato bakes, and a vanilla bean custard Danish. Returning favorites such as the Pistachio Cream Cold Brew and Pistachio Latte are also part of the winter menu, providing customers with diverse options to enjoy alongside their commitment to sustainable practices.

Starbucks’ decision to extend the acceptance of reusable cups to drive-thru and mobile orders reflects its dedication to fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious approach within the coffee industry. This initiative aligns with a larger movement towards reducing single-use plastics and encourages customers to actively participate in building a more eco-friendly future.
