In 2021, a Tesla software engineer sustained injuries after being attacked by a malfunctioning robot on the floor of the company’s Texas factory. The incident, reported by The Information last month, occurred while the engineer was programming software to control robots at Tesla’s Austin, Texas facility.

According to witnesses, two robots used for cutting car parts from aluminium had been safely disabled for maintenance, but a third robot was inadvertently left operational. During the attack, this robot pinned the engineer to a surface and inflicted injuries on his arms and back.

The assault caused the Tesla software engineer to bleed, and it only ceased when another worker on the factory floor activated the emergency stop button. This allowed the engineer to free himself from the robot’s grip, leaving a trail of blood as he escaped, as reported by an eyewitness.

An injury report, obtained by The Information, was submitted to federal officials and health authorities in Travis County. The report indicated that the engineer suffered a “laceration, cut, or open wound” on his left hand, although the injury did not require him to take time off from work.

Tesla declined to provide comments on the incident. This incident is not an isolated one for the electric car manufacturer, as injury reports submitted to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration revealed that one in 21 workers at Tesla’s Texas factory experienced injuries of varying degrees last year.
